Home Security - How to Secure Your House While You Are on Vacation
Many people do not get to spend quality time with their families, as they prefer to stay back at home since they fear a breach of home security while on vacation. There are several basic things that can help secure your homes, permitting you to take a vacation without worrying about home security issues.
Tips For Securing Your House Before Leaving For A Vacation
o Be sure that all external doors are sturdy with good foolproof locks. Double check if all windows and doors are locked securely.
o Check to see if your home security system is fully functional and that any breach in security will trigger an alarm that will be promptly responded too.
o Be sure that your security lighting is set. Set a timer to operate your internal lights in a random fashion perhaps switching on a radio or FM to give the impression there is someone home. The timer could be set to go on and off in particular rooms just as when you are at home.
o Do not forget to lock the garage door before you leave.
o If possible try and get someone to stay in the house and get him or her familiar with the home security systems and alarms.
o If possible stop the delivery of newspaper, mail, milk etc. till your return or have a neighbor pick them up for you.
o Ensure that your garden is taken care of, while you are away; wilting and uncared for pots are a sure giveaway that the house is uncared for. You can use a sprinkler set on a timer to do the job.
o Have a word with your neighbor to look out for any trouble and give them your contact number in case of emergencies.
o It will be safer to leave a house with a good home security system installed. If you don't have an adequate home security system, get one a few weeks prior to your trip to be able to learn how to program and operate it without any hitches. A reputed, reliable firm with good after sales service will be an ideal choice. Do comparison-shopping and do get quotes from different vendors and choose one who offers the best quality within your budget. Good systems will be an added advantage as insurance can be got at a discount on account of the home security system.
o Inform the police that you will be away and ask them to watch your house at regular intervals.
Be sure that your home is secure while you are away and enjoy your vacation without the stress of a vulnerable house.

How To Become A Locksmith?
The dictionary definition of "locksmith"; "A Locksmith is one that makes or repairs locks" to put it bluntly. Locksmithing was (and still is), in essence, one of the earliest/best forms of security against many types of crimes or people.
In more recent years, the term has become a bit more expanded, to include many forms and types of locksmithing. Commercial (working out of a storefront), mobile (working out of a vehicle), institutional (employed by an institution) or investigational (forensic locksmiths) or may specialize in one aspect of the skill, such as an automotive lock specialist, a master key system specialist or a safe technician. They may also be security consultants or one of many other possible ends for this type of career. Are some examples of what becoming a locksmith may bring to you as a career choice?
Becoming a locksmith tends to be quite the job. Among other things, it takes skill, concentration, and creativity as well as patience to become a locksmith. It's wise to know all fields and opportunities that would be open to you. You must first consider which of them you'd like to take part in. All have Pros and Cons, such as pay, hours, skill, and others. This is why it can take some time to decide which of them you'd like to venture in first, as well as decide which one would be best for you. Also, most countries require completion of an Apprenticeship, or some level of formal education required. This varies from country to country. This tends to mean a lot of study and research is required, and it is best to check around for the levels of education and skills required to be a locksmith in your country before you make a decision, as the differences can impact your entire career.
There are two types of locksmith licenses:
o Automobile master key licenses are for individuals employed as locksmiths. These individuals are licensed to sell or be in possession of equipment that enables them to work on switches or locks of motor vehicles or business and/or residential door locks. These licenses are renewed every five years.
o Restricted automobile master key licenses are for individuals who fall under the automotive and auto body technician trades as well as tow truck drivers. This license restricts locksmith to be in possession of equipment that is designed strictly to operate the switches or locks of motor vehicles.
Locksmith is now being taught in several trade schools and engineering departments around the world. For example, Australia offers a degree in locksmithing in the school of engineering. While other schools offer a certificate. The primary way to become a locksmith to is become familiar with the makeup of the key and lock. Today, locksmiths do much more than repairing locks they must also be able to asses the potential break in factor and in some sense must implement the appropriate equipment with multiple locks and screen doors. Currently, there are several types of locks on the market, making it more difficult for the locksmith to become familiar with the nuts and bolts of the operation, literally.

Pennies a Day to Buy the Best Shower Filter
Just think of the money you spend every year on hair products, including shampoos that are supposed to make your hair reflect the brilliance of nature. Conditioners to tame your unruly locks and give you a movie star look. Hair appliances to straighten your hair, or curl your hair, add to the cost of yearly hair maintenance. Add the cost of salon color and you have quite a hefty cost at the end of the year.
These are not bad things. But, you need to be smart and start with the most basic thing your hair needs. The first need is for your hair to be truly clean. All of our municipal water companies use chlorine to disinfect our water, and some of it stays in the water that comes from our tap.
We wouldn't drink tap water with chlorine in it. So you can see that it is not something we should bathe in either. It costs just pennies a day to purchase the best shower filter. And it is guaranteed for your lifetime!
Before you had a shower filter to remove chlorine, your hair left the shower with a coating of chlorine. No wonder your hair did not reflect the brilliance of nature but instead was matted and hard to comb. Adding the conditioner of choice did make it easy to comb but with chlorine underlying all, you did not get the movie star look.
A 2 stage showerhead filter promotes healthy hair. Chlorine strips your hair of the natural oils nature supplies. It will give your hair a chance to heal from years of "chlorine abuse". You will see and feel the difference in your hair and your skin after your very first chlorine free shower.
Buying the best shower filter is not an additional expense. It is the primary investment in healthy, beautiful hair and skin.

Weather Stripping Doors - A Good Home Improvement Task
Sealing the gaps around the doors in your home is critically important for cutting down on drafts and reducing energy loss. Although these small gaps may seem insignificant, they can add up to some serious loss of energy. To make this clear, a narrow gap of just 1/4 inch at the bottom of an entry door is equal to having a three inch square hole in the middle of your door. So, as you can see, one of the best home improvement tasks you can do is to apply weatherstripping to the doors in your home.
When a door is closed, warm and cool air can escape out between the door jamb and the door. You will get both more comfort and an increase in energy saving by sealing those gaps.
To begin this home improvement task, you need to take your supplies outside. When you are ready to begin, close and lock the door so that is it closed tightly. Measure the top of the door from the edge of the door stop on the left to the door stop on the right. (The door stop is the trim that runs along the door all around). Next take those measurements and mark the weather strip. Use snippers to cut the strip at the mark you made. Be sure it fits properly and then place the piece of weather stripping at the top of the door stop, but be sure not to press it too hard into place so that the door will open hard. Next take the screws that are provided and drive a screw into the middle hole on the metal strip. Do this until all of the screw holes have screws in them. If you begin in the center and work toward the ends you will have put equal pressure along the entire strip, ensuring a good tight fit.
The next step is in this do-it-yourself home improvement task is to install the weatherstripping on one side of the door. Measure from the piece of weather strip that you just applied to the threshold plate at the bottom of the door. Take these measurements and cut your piece of weather stripping. Once again put the weather strip against the door and secure it to the door stop the same way you did for the first piece. Now go ahead and do exactly the same thing for the other side of the door and install it in the same manner.
Now that you have all three pieces installed, you should go inside and close the door tightly. Check around the entire door for any daylight. If you can see any daylight at all peeking through, then go back outside, close and lock the door again and remove the screws in that area that you saw the light and push the stripping in a little harder, then simply put the screws back in again. Repeat this around the entire door until you no longer see daylight when inside looking out.

5 Easy Things You Can Do To Improve Home Security Right Now
Oftentimes when thinking about improving home security, many people start immediately focusing on electronic devices like security systems, alarms, cameras, and so forth. And to be sure, all of those products have a role to play in a high quality home security plan. But actually there are some very simple things that anyone can do to raise the security level in and around their home with very little cost and effort. And here is our list of 5 things that can help make your home more secure right away:
1. If you happen to be one of those folks who likes to leave a key to the front door of your house hidden under your doormat, or over the door frame, or within easy reach of your front door, you are just inviting a home break-in and making it easy for the burglar. Experienced burglars know that lots of people hide the key to the front door in close proximity to the door to make it more convenient for them to get in when they forget their key for some reason. So they just check around the front door area and can often come up with easy entry into your home in a very short period of time by doing so. Its not a good idea to hide your key outside at all therefore, but if you must, at least hide it a good distance away from the front door where no one would think to look.
2. One of the other most common ways that burglars can gain easy access to your home is through an open or unlocked window. This just makes it way too easy for them. So if you happen to be one of those folks who loves to have your windows open, at least install safety locks that will only allow them to be open part of the way and not enough for someone to be able to climb through. And when you are away from the house, it's best to have the windows shut and locked at all times.
3. Just drive down almost any street and you will find houses that have trees and large shrubs up next to the house where someone could hide. That is a bad safety strategy, and it would be good for you to go outside and look at your home from the standpoint of an intruder. How easy is it to get close to your home without being seen? Can someone gain access to upper floors of the home by climbing a nearby tree? If you spot possible hiding places close to the house, do whatever is necessary to eliminate that danger. Prevention is your best protection in this area.
4. Many home intrusions take place at night simply because darkness helps conceal suspicious behavior. So bright lights are an intruder's worst enemy. In view of that, some well-placed motion detection lights can do wonders for your home security. They are cheap and simple to install, and can be very effective in preventing break-ins.
5. If you have nice possessions, like an expensive car, keep it in the garage. Try to do as little as possible to attract attention to any pricey posserssions that you may have. Burglars would rather invest their time and energy in homes that promise a good payday as opposed to those where they can't really tell much about what is inside. So keep windows covered so that it is hard to see inside, and use shades at night to keep others from looking inside your home to see what valuables are there.
All of these ideas are very simple and easy to implement, but together they can raise your home security level right away.

Knock Knock Burglaries - Could You Be A Victim?
As ever, burglaries are rife and many people will have experienced this unfortunate event or know of someone who has. As with any "career" and I use this term loosely, there has to be a degree of keeping up with the times. Indeed burglars are always coming up with new and creative way's of gaining access to a property to pilfer people's hard earned possessions.
One particular "trick" being seen in more and more circumstances is the use of distraction methods. This has coined the phrase "knock knock" burglaries and is certainly not as humorous as the name suggests. Usually the thief will operate in conjunction with a friend who will come to your front door once they have ascertained that there is only yourself at home.
They will then employ various methods to distract you whilst their counterpart enters your property from the rear. This could range from simply pretending to be from some local authority, such as the gas/electricity or water board or taking on the guise of a salesperson. Anything really to distract you for long enough to take what they want from your property (and this usually isn't very long at all).
Of course if you are unfortunate enough to experience a burglary whilst you are not at home the best you can do to lessen the impact of the situation is ensure you have a home insurance policy in place covering for the correct value of your contents. Many people still do not realise the importance of such a policy and the peace of mind it can bring. Imagine if you returned to find your home ransacked and £30, 000 of content removed, could you afford to replace this from your own finances? Of course this would have to be an extreme case and indeed most burglaries are purely opportunistic with the thieves getting away with mainly electrical items and jewellery.
Of course you can do your utmost to ensure your home is protected by installing extra window/door locks (should you need them) and an alarm system with sensor lights to the rear of your property (and anywhere else poorly lit). This should also help decrease the price of your house insurance policy as you will be of less risk to the insurer.
By ensuring access to your property is limited and security systems are in place you should greatly reduce the risk of a burglary taking place. Ensuring you have a home insurance policy in place will give you that little extra peace of mind.

Home Burglar Alarm Features
Family expenditures always include a great amount of spending on food, clothing, and recreational pursuits but you'll seldom see family money being spent on having a home burglar alarm installed. If you consider it sensible to spend money on buying accessories and traveling out of town, you should definitely consider purchasing a home burglar alarm as a wise investment as well.
A home burglar alarm works in various ways and takes note of changes in temperature or motion in any part of the house where the alarm has been activated. Clients are usually given the choice as to what they wish their home burglar alarm to consist of. Read on to know more about your options.
Parts and Features of Home Burglar Alarms
Control Panel - This is the brain of the whole system, and although it's generally located in a hidden compartment at your bedroom or garage, it can actually be installed at any part of the house.
Security Keypad - All home burglar alarms have a security keypad; once the owner chooses a password for the system, he or she must enter it using the security keypad to switch the system on or off. The switch may be done audibly or inaudibly depending on your preferences.
Motion Detecting Devices - You see these used in movies a lot. These devices make use of invisible rays which will send an alarm if somebody passes through it.
Contact - These devices are installed at the various points of entry of the house such as doors and windows. When any of these points of entry are accessed, an alarm will once again be sent to the necessary authorities. Consider having these installed on all points of entry and even on doors leading to the ventilation system of your house.
Some home burglar alarms come with a preset number of contacts so you may have to order for additional units to accommodate all points of entry to your home.
Devices that Detect Breaking of Glass - The act of breaking glass is commonly performed by all sorts of burglars and thieves. This, however, will be detected immediately by glass-breaking detection devices and which will consequently send an alarm to the security department assigned to your house.
Panic Buttons - This is the home burglar alarm's equivalent to the manual sign box of fire alarm systems. Pushing this button will be immediately translated as a call for help and the police will be sent to your home immediately. There are some alarms that will even allow you to wear this around your neck or wrist.
Communication Portal - Your home burglar alarm may also come with a communication portal or any other device which will allow persons at home to communicate with the authorities. You may however have to enter your password once more before the authorities will be able to respond to your call for assistance.

Door Deadbolt - Prevent Home Invasion
Most of the people today constitute the working class. With the growth in "private sector", there has been an incredible growth in the number of jobs all over the world. Business demands a person to be mobile most of the times. CEO's and business managers have to travel from one place to another every now and then.
Due to this the subject of "home security" has attracted a lot of debates and discussions. You would not want to leave your house without proper security and come back to see that it has been burglarized, isn't it? Scientists, since decades, have been inventing one product after another in order to find a breakthrough in home-security.
However, you cannot totally depend on technology as every new technology has some weak points which burglars know to exploit to their full potential. But there are many simple-to-install locking mechanisms available today which can protect your home from being burglarized. Dead-bolts are perhaps the most important of all locking mechanisms available at present.
What is a dead bolt, exactly? Simply put, it is that portion of a lock which is pulled back using a key. You might be surprised to find out that the effort of more than 15 people is required to break a typical "door deadbolt" lock. Different types of dead-bolts are now available. The more cylinders found in a dead-bolt, the greater is its strength.
The most inexpensive item that you can buy to protect your home from burglars is a "door deadbolt" lock. There are many other high tech gadgets and systems available that you can buy, but they can run you into the thousands of dollars. In comparison, a "door deadbolt" is effective and will cost you very little.
You can opt for a "double deadbolt" door lock if you want more reliability and strength. When a burglar would find a locked door, the first thing that he would do is to kick the door in order to break it. However, if that door has a "double deadbolt" lock, then the burglar would never be able to break in.

Ten Tips For Keeping Your Home Safe When You're Away
Vacation means relaxation. It means getting away from the stress of everyday life and finding bliss in some luxurious hotel suite, or in some exotic country with delicious eats. Vacation means taking a break from your normal life-it's a time out from computers, spreadsheets, angry customers and office coffee. However, even if your mind may already be floating in clouds of delight just thinking about your next vacation, before you check out, don't forget to take these ten steps to insure your home security. After all, when you're away, thieves and home disasters are the last things you want to stress about.
1. Inform your good neighbors that you shall be away; ask them to keep an eye out on your house. Caveat: Don't tell too many people your plans, remember loose lips sink ships. One offhand comment could lead to calamity, so don't be a blabbermouth. Just let one or two neighbors that you are on good terms with know what's up.
2. Suspend your mail and newspaper delivery, or have that trusty neighbor collect everything so it doesn't gather on your doorstep. A pile of mail is a sure sign that your house is ripe for breaking in and entering.
3. Make your house look alive. Pull the 'I'm not at home, but it looks like I am' trick by setting up light timers. You may even consider plugging your TV and radio into a timer as well. Install motion detection lights. This little maneuver works as a great ersatz home alarm.
4. Lock your doors. Make sure that they are locked. Turn off and unplug your appliances. Turn off gas and water to avoid any unfortunate floods or gas leaks. Close windows. Lock the garage. Double check everything.
5. Put all your valuables in a safe deposit box. Or place them in some obscure hiding place. Make sure you document all your goods too, just in case. You can never have enough security measures in place, after all.
6. Turn your phone ringer off and don't change your answering machine message to announce your vacation plans. Leave a friend or neighbor with an emergency contact number.
7. Have your good old neighbor place your garbage cans on the curb on pickup days, and have them return them after the garbage has been picked up. Also, have your neighbor park in your driveway to enhance that lived in look.
8. Invest in high quality deadbolt locks for all your doors.
9. You should also probably call your home security company and tell them that you will be away. Or if you don't have a home security system, consider getting one. They are pretty effective as thieves will usually look for homes with easy access. A home alarm is definitely a deterrent. Put up security system decals and logos too.
10. Ask a friend to mow the lawn if you're going to be away for a long period of time and give them keys to the house so they can make sure everything is in order.

Locks, Bolts and Keys For Your Home
Most security experts agree that a single outer door lock will not provide adequate protection. For example, any tumbler-type lock with an opening for a key also provides an opening large enough for the lock to be picked. Thus, a combination of two different types of locks are recommended. Here are the most common types of locks used in the home:
Spring Latch Locks: A popular and convenient lock that snaps closed whenever the beveled latch seats into a striker plate is the spring-latch lock. However, this lock can be easily forced by inserting through the door frame a thin blade or stiff plastic between the latch and the strike plate. Thus, a spring lock should always be augmented by a second lock of a different type.
Dead Bolt Locks: The dead bolt lock features a solid, rectangular latch that forms a bolt between the door frame and the door itself. This lock is difficult to force or jimmy and is a good choice as an auxiliary to any other key lock. It's available for either key operation or manual interior knob.
Barrel-Type Bolt: A barrel-type bolt serves the same function as the dead-bolt lock but is restricted to manual, interior operation only. It may be used with an inxpensive night-latch, and it is difficult to force if it's well made and installed properly.
Chain Locks: Used as a supplementary interior lock, the welded chain offers a valuable security feature. It permits the user to open a door partially to exchange letters, messages, or small parcels without completely unlocking the door. For proper mounting, the slide should be installed just above and slanting toward the chain.
Remember, if you have taken possession of a new home or apartment, you should immediately change the pin-tumbler locks on all exterior doors. A registered locksmith can usually alter the previous combination.

Why You Need Door Frames
Door frames are essential components for hanging doors in your home. They come in many widths and heights, as well as different shapes and sizes. Some frames are just for the main reason of the doors itself and others are more decorative with elaborate facings. Bathroom and bedrooms are the main parts of the homes where doors are needed to provide privacy. You also need frames for the entrance doors of the home. The frames of the doors hold the hinges and the locks, which enable the doors to open and close freely.
To start making a door frame, you first have to determine how much material you need by measuring the size of the opening. The material can be one of many different kinds of wood, such as oak, mahogany, pine and birch. You have to install the header, which is a finished piece of board that covers up the rough stud of the frame. The side frames come next, also flat pieces of board, and they help to keep the header in place. You have to ensure that the header is level and that the side pieces are plum - straight up and down.
The next step in finishing the frame is to install facings on both sides of the door to cover up any spaces between the board and the wall. They can be plain or very decorative, with colonial styles using crown moldings and small wooden blocks in the upper corners.
One you have the facings in place, then you take your door and install the hinges. One side of the hinge is on the door and the other is attached to the frame. Most doors have two hinges, such as a door used inside the home. On heavier doors, three hinges are the norm. When you see that the door is moving back and forth on the hinges freely, then you install the locks. There are special locks for bathrooms and bedrooms with a locking device on the inside. Entrance locks are usually keyed.
The final task is to install small strips of wood, called door stops, along the top and the sides of the door. These strips keep the door from swinging too far in either direction and causing damage to the hinges, the frame and the door.
